{"id":93389,"date":"2026-05-08T18:03:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T18:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diyhaven858.wasmer.app\/index.php\/dont-wait-for-the-pollen-spike-start-these-6-allergy-prep-steps-today\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T18:03:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T18:03:37","slug":"dont-wait-for-the-pollen-spike-start-these-6-allergy-prep-steps-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diyhaven858.wasmer.app\/index.php\/dont-wait-for-the-pollen-spike-start-these-6-allergy-prep-steps-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t Wait for the Pollen Spike: Start These 6 Allergy Prep Steps Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"u-speakableText-p1\">Due to elevated pollen counts, May is usually the worst month for those with allergies in most US regions, according to the Allergy and Asthma Network.<\/p>\n<p><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"u-speakableText-p2\">\u201cAllergies to airborne allergens such as pollen can cause symptoms including sneezing, a runny nose, nasal congestion, an itchiness in the nose and throat and red, watery eyes,\u201d explains Dr. Stephanie Kayode, a consultant allergist at Allergy Care London, describing signs of hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis. \u201cThese symptoms occur because pollen allergens provoke inflammation and swelling within the nose, eyes and throat when inhaled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As <span section=\"shortcodeLink\"><span>someone with terrible allergies<\/span><\/span>, my goal is to allergy-proof my home before pollen has a chance to infiltrate it and trigger symptoms. To find out how, I spoke with allergists.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"f5f48143-91e7-4dd0-8920-d706a65fd1a5\" data-ng-block=\"{\">1. Turn your air purifier on<\/h2>\n<p>If your <span section=\"shortcodeLink\"><span>air purifier<\/span><\/span> has been sitting in the back of your closet collecting dust (yikes, another allergen), now is the perfect time to wipe it down and bring it out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndoor air purifiers, particularly those with high-efficiency particulate air filters, are effective at removing pollens and air pollutants from the air we breathe in our homes, thus improving allergy symptoms,\u201d says Kayode. This means that similar or lower pollen levels can cause more severe allergic reactions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing a filter that\u2019s an appropriate size for your space is important, and some people place them by entryways for maximum effectiveness,\u201d adds Meagan W. Shepherd, founder of The Allergy Aesthetic and owner of Shepherd Allergy.<\/p>\n<p>Placing an air purifier in a high-traffic area, such as a bedroom or living room, can be especially beneficial. Get your HVAC checked<\/h2>\n<p>HEPA filters aren\u2019t just recommended for air purifiers. Your <span section=\"shortcodeLink\"><span>HVAC<\/span><\/span> systems should use them, too, and they should be changed every three months or as needed. You can check your manufacturer\u2019s instructions for this info.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake sure to schedule a tune-up before spring starts, and clear debris from around the outer unit,\u201d Shepherd states. \u201cMake sure the condensate drain lines [which remove excess moisture] aren\u2019t clogged.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If applicable, set indoor humidity to 40%-50%. You can also do this if you have a <span section=\"shortcodeLink\"><span>humidifier<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"f5f48143-91e7-4dd0-8920-d706a65fd1a5\" data-ng-block=\"{\">3. Monitor the pollen forecast<\/h2>\n<p>You can keep <span section=\"shortcodeLink\"><span>track of pollen forecasts<\/span><\/span> with apps including Allergy Plus, My Pollen Forecast and Zyrtec AllergyCast. Kayode recommends doing this and limiting outdoor activities when the pollen count is high. Prevent pollen from inviting itself inside<\/h2>\n<p>While it\u2019s impossible to avoid pollen completely, there are certain steps you can take to lessen your indoor exposure. For one, Shepherd advises keeping windows and doors closed. If you keep track of the pollen forecast, ensure you do so on high-pollen days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChange clothes after coming indoors, and keep your hair tied back or wear a hat when outdoors,\u201d Shepherd says. Kayode adds that you can also wear sunglasses to reduce pollen exposure to your eyes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you hang laundry outside to dry, you should shake it out before bringing it inside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Depending on how bad your allergies are, you may even want to arrange for someone else to mow your lawn or opt for a <span section=\"shortcodeLink\"><span>robot lawn mower<\/span><\/span> to avoid pollen exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Even when you get into your car, you can exercise precautions. \u201cWhen getting into a hot car, turn on the recirculation system with the AC so cabin air is reused without drawing more pollen into the car,\u201d says Shepherd. You can also keep your car\u2019s windows closed to ward off pollen, Kayode adds.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"f5f48143-91e7-4dd0-8920-d706a65fd1a5\" data-ng-block=\"{\">5. Stock your medicine cabinet<\/h2>\n<p>If you notice allergy symptoms or want to prevent them, you can use a saline nasal rinse to clear inhaled pollen from your nasal passages. My doctor recommended I use the <span class=\"c-shortcodeCommerceLink\">Arm and Hammer Simply Saline Nasal Care Daily Mist<\/span> for this reason.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s not enough and your symptoms are interfering with your daily life, Kayode advises you to consult your doctor to discuss starting allergy medications, such as antihistamine tablets and steroid nasal sprays. Your doctor may suggest taking a daytime antihistamine proactively, especially on days with a projected high pollen count.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"f5f48143-91e7-4dd0-8920-d706a65fd1a5\" data-ng-block=\"{\">The bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>While you can\u2019t completely avoid pollen, there are steps you can take to limit your exposure and minimize allergies when inside your home.
