To most people, they\u2019re forever Claire and Phil Dunphy, the hilariously chaotic couple at the center of <em class=\"italic\">Modern Family<\/em>, which ran from 2009 to 2020 and still holds a permanent spot in pop-culture history\u2014and, frankly, in a lot of our hearts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">True to form, they slipped right back into that familiar dynamic when they hopped on our afternoon call, seated side-by-side to talk about something decidedly less funny than their usual material: meningococcal disease, also known as meningitis. We were meeting to discuss their recent partnership with the pharmaceutical company GSK on its \u201cAsk2BSure\u201d public health campaign, which encourages parents to learn more about meningitis B and talk to their teens\u2019 doctors about vaccination\u2014especially before milestones like college move-in day, team sports and all the shared water bottles and close-quarter chaos that tend to come with adolescence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">As part of the campaign, Bowen and Burrell filmed a seven-minute video called \u201cMening-Itinerary,\u201d reviving the kind of rapid-fire banter that made Claire and Phil such iconic T.V. parents in the first place\u2014while also educating viewers about meningitis. Somehow, they make the transition from sitcom parents to public-health advocates feel oddly seamless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">Ahead, my conversation with Bowen and Burrell, which was equal parts informative, heartfelt and funny. What was it like teaming up again to film it?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s always fun to get to work together. We\u2019re still in and out of each other\u2019s lives, so it wasn\u2019t some dramatic reunion, but it does feel like comfy shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re basically playing versions of ourselves in the video because we are parents of older kids. That part came pretty naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cI also like making him say \u2018meningococcal disease.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cYeah, she likes making me say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"this-campaign-tackles-a-serious-health-topic-in-such-a-fun-way-how-did-you-approach-that-balance\" class=\"font-canela mb-4 mt-8 text-2xl font-light leading-tight text-black md:text-3xl\">This campaign tackles a serious health topic in such a fun way. How did you approach that balance?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cWe both really believed in the message, but we also knew we\u2019re not doctors or scientists\u2014we\u2019re just people with experience being silly. The script managed to thread that needle really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cWe care very much about this as parents of teens, but you need a little sugar to help the medicine go down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cA lot of parents don\u2019t realize that while many kids are vaccinated against meningitis strains A, C, W and Y, meningitis B vaccination isn\u2019t always part of the routine conversation. You have to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cOur kids are in sports, dorms and social situations where there\u2019s a lot of close contact and sharing drinks. The campaign is really about encouraging parents to have a conversation with their doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cI recently visited Ty\u2019s alma mater, where my son now goes, and it was basically like the video in real life. I was at fraternity houses and parties with people offering me their cups, and I was like, \u2018Here\u2019s the thing, kid. I\u2019m in the middle of this campaign right now\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">She adds that when her son went off to college, she realized she actually didn\u2019t know whether he was fully vaccinated. \u201cI was playing catch-up, and I figured if I was, other parents probably were too.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-surprised-you-most-while-learning-about-meningitis-b\" class=\"font-canela mb-4 mt-8 text-2xl font-light leading-tight text-black md:text-3xl\">What surprised you most while learning about meningitis B?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cThe randomness of it surprised me. You think, \u2018If it\u2019s so contagious, why doesn\u2019t everyone at the party get sick?\u2019 There are a lot of factors involved, which made it feel even scarier to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cHonestly, I was surprised people don\u2019t talk about it more. With kids in sports, we hear constantly about things like mono or other illnesses spreading through shared water bottles, but this just wasn\u2019t something that ever came up in my many pediatrician visits unless I brought it up myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"you-spoke-with-survivors-and-families-affected-by-meningitis-what-stayed-with-you\" class=\"font-canela mb-4 mt-8 text-2xl font-light leading-tight text-black md:text-3xl\">You spoke with survivors and families affected by meningitis. What stayed with you?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cBoth of the survivors we met were incredibly inspiring, but what really stayed with me was how passionate they were about spreading awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cThey called themselves \u2018the lucky ones,\u2019 which really stuck with me. They\u2019ve made it part of their mission to educate other families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cAnd they were both funnier than we were.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"i-work-for-a-beauty-magazine-so-i-have-to-ask-what-are-your-skin-care-routines\" class=\"font-canela mb-4 mt-8 text-2xl font-light leading-tight text-black md:text-3xl\">I work for a beauty magazine, so I have to ask: What are your skin-care routines?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m out. This is Julie\u2019s category. I splash water on my face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cI wasn\u2019t blessed with beautiful skin as a child\u2014I was on Accutane twice\u2014so every day is a journey into skin care. There\u2019s lots of retinol and serums involved. Right now, I\u2019m really into this Sisley serum. You could go broke buying it, but it\u2019s a good way to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">She added, jokingly: \u201cI don\u2019t buy shoes or clothes or cars. It\u2019s all going into serum. And, of course, sunscreen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-there-any-upcoming-projects-youre-excited-about-right-now\" class=\"font-canela mb-4 mt-8 text-2xl font-light leading-tight text-black md:text-3xl\">Are there any upcoming projects you\u2019re excited about right now?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty:<\/strong> \u201cThere are a few things, but honestly, Julie and I were just talking about how hard it is to be away from family when you have teenagers. Living in Utah means work usually involves leaving, and even in L.A. now, nothing really shoots there anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">There\u2019s this very small window of time with teenagers, and it feels like the right move to be with the kids right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cThey don\u2019t need us very often, but when they do, you want to be there. I\u2019ve definitely passed on some work because of that, and I wouldn\u2019t have it any other way right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">We were lucky enough to work in L.A. for 11 years on <em class=\"italic\">Modern Family<\/em>, and we knew while it was happening that it was special. That doesn\u2019t happen twice\u2014unless you\u2019re Ed O\u2019Neill, and then it happens over and over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">There are things I\u2019m developing, but if it ends up on T.V., you\u2019ll see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"not-to-make-this-about-me-but-i-do-have-a-12-month-old-so-i-feel-compelled-to-ask-any-parenting-advice\" class=\"font-canela mb-4 mt-8 text-2xl font-light leading-tight text-black md:text-3xl\">Not to make this about me, but I do have a 12-month-old, so I feel compelled to ask: Any parenting advice?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Ty: <\/strong>\u201cSavor the moment. Every phase is cool in its own way. It definitely gets more complicated, though. It becomes less exhausting physically and more exhausting emotionally as they get older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie:<\/strong> \u201cWere you like me with charts and graphs about the optimal nap schedule?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\"><em class=\"italic\">NewBeauty<\/em>: <\/strong>\u201cNo, I\u2019m definitely more of a Type B mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\"><strong class=\"font-semibold\">Julie: <\/strong>\u201cThat\u2019s great. I wish I\u2019d been more Type B. That would honestly be my advice. Why did I worry about every chart and graph? I remember thinking after I had the twins, \u2018Maybe I\u2019ll have one more, and this time I\u2019ll just slap the baby on me and roll and we\u2019ll be great.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md mb-6 leading-relaxed text-gray-500\">That didn\u2019t happen, but it is my one regret.
