Durrance Collegiate Professor of Information at the University of Michigan School of Information, told Healio. \u201cOne of the big complaints is how much dialysis takes away from patients\u2019 ability to do things they enjoy, spend time with family, pursue hobbies, go to work. The patient-activation intervention involved online educational modules and peer mentoring about dialysis through the NKF peer mentoring program. The intervention sought to increase patient motivation and confidence to actively participate in their kidney care. The provider-education intervention involved online and team training for all dialysis center staffers. Clinics also implemented the use of a checklist at the beginning of each patient\u2019s session to assess risk for hypotension during dialysis, which also provided treatment considerations as potential next steps to prevent hypotension during dialysis. Recovery time after a dialysis session was a secondary outcome. Hypotension during dialysis may contribute to longer recovery time, <b>Rajiv Saran, MBBS, DTCD, MD, MRCP (UK), MS,<\/b> the<b> <\/b>Florence E. Bingham Professor of Nephrology at the University of Michigan, told Healio.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mug left\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Saran_Rajiv_2026_80x106\" style=\" height:106px; width:80px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/~\/media\/slack-news\/nephrology\/mugs\/s\/saran_rajiv_2026_80x106.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rajiv Saran<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe main symptom that bothers people postdialysis is fatigue, a sense of being washed out,\u201d Saran said. \u201cThey gradually recover, and some people recover faster than others. That\u2019s a very important arbiter of somebody\u2019s cardiovascular health, their ability to tolerate rapid fluid removal and exchange across synthetic dialysis membranes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study involved 1,406 patients and compared the interventions with each other and with no intervention across 20 Fresenius Medical Care dialysis facility site partners. Intervention duration was 24 weeks with a 12-week follow-up period. The interventions were delivered from February 2023 to October 2024 after a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute.<\/p>\n<p>In study results, participants at facilities that offered the patient-activation intervention were 29% more likely to report recovery before reaching home and 32% more likely to report same-day recovery compared with participants with no intervention. Compared with participants at facilities that offered the provider-education intervention, those in the patient-activation intervention were 29% more likely to report recovery before reaching home and 41% more likely to report same-day recovery.<\/p>\n<p>The provider-education intervention was not associated with recovery time, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mug left\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bragg-Gresham_Jennifer_2026_80x106\" style=\" height:106px; width:80px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/~\/media\/slack-news\/nephrology\/mugs\/b\/bragg-gresham_jennifer_2026_80x106.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jennifer Bragg-Gresham<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think the difference peer education made was just talking about the importance of exactly which behaviors patients can do to feel better \u2014 not shortening their treatments, not leaving early, not skipping any treatments,\u201d <b>Jennifer Bragg-Gresham, PhD,<\/b> research scientist of internal medicine at the University of Michigan, told Healio. \u201cHaving someone with that experience sharing what a big effect you can actually play in your own health and how you feel, I could see that being pretty motivating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another important factor patients in the patient-activation group reported learning from peers was how to effectively communicate with facility staff, according to Veinot. <\/p>\n<p>Benefits might extend beyond individual patients, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the number of people that underwent peer mentoring was small, there is a diffusion effect,\u201d Saran said. \u201cWe do know that patients who received the patient activation intervention, they did talk to other patients and transmitted that information. &#8230; We meant it to be a facility-level intervention, of course, transmitted from patient to patient.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Overall, 58% of patients in the intervention said they had told other patients in their clinic about things they had learned from it, and they shared this information with a mean of 3.4 other patients, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n<h2>For more information:<\/h2>\n<p>      <b>Jennifer Bragg-Gresham, PhD,<\/b><b> <\/b>is a research scientist of internal medicine at the Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center in the department of internal medicine, division of nephrology at the University of Michigan.
