Busfield\u2019s accuser and his twin brother worked as child actors on the show.<\/p>\n According to the criminal complaint, the child involved claimed that Busfield first touched his \u201cprivate areas\u201d inappropriately when he was 7 years old. He accused the West Wing<\/em> alum of touching him three or four times.<\/p>\n In a separate incident when the child was 8 years old, Busfield allegedly touched him five or six times.<\/p>\n The boy was \u201cvery afraid of Tim and was relieved when he was off set,\u201d according to the affidavit. He also stated that he \u201cwas afraid to tell anyone because Tim was the director, and he feared Tim would get mad at him.\u201d<\/p>\n The child\u2019s mother reported to Child Protective Services that the alleged abuse occurred between late 2022 and the second half of 2024, according to the complaint. The child was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety following the alleged incidents.<\/p>\n According to the affidavit, Timothy Busfield was interviewed by Officer Marvin Brown<\/strong> via phone regarding the alleged incidents in November 2025. He was asked if he had any \u201cphysical contact\u201d with the children, such as picking them up or tickling them.<\/p>\n \u201cTimothy said it was highly likely that he would have,\u201d the affidavit stated, adding that Busfield described the set as a \u201cplayful environment.\u201d Busfield added that there was \u201cnever a weird moment about it\u201d and that any contact was \u201cin front of the parents,\u201d according to the complaint.<\/p>\n Busfield also stated that there was \u201cno protocol\u201d for touching children on set.<\/p>\n \u201cI mean, I\u2019m always around people, right? It would be, you know, in front of the parents. There would never be a weird moment about it,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t really remember picking those boys up. I remember picking up the boy who followed them. Back in November, the West Wing actor, 68, allegedly told Officer Marvin Brown that his wife was listening on speakerphone during his interview regarding the ongoing allegations of child sex [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n According to the complaint, Timothy Busfield also admitted that he and wife Melissa Gilbert<\/strong> \u201cdid buy the two boys Christmas gifts and were together [at] several social functions.\u201d<\/p>\n Brown concluded that Busfield allegedly chose to \u201cinvite the family to off-set gatherings, with his wife buying Christmas gifts to foster closeness.\u201d He further theorized that this was an example of \u201cclassic grooming to erode boundaries, isolate the victim, and silence suspicions by blending abuse into normalcy.\u201d<\/p>\n Days before the arrest warrant was issued, Melissa Gilbert took to Instagram to share a quote that read, \u201cYou seem to have a mistaken discomfort for injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n In a comment, she stated that she was referring to those \u201cplaying the victim and blaming others.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s about not taking accountability for your own situation,\u201d Gilbert added. \u201cIt\u2019s about being a big whiny baby. I saw this quote and it struck me. I have a particularly hard time with people who play the victim. Own your s***. Step up. It\u2019s all pretty general. Has nothing to do with politics but everything to do with privilege, attitude and weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n In November 2025, Gilbert also reflected on having to kiss a 23-year-old costar when she was just 15 on Little House on the Prairie<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cThrough the lens of today, this is shocking. I have no words other than to say , \u2018I WAS A CHILD. I WAS FIFTEEN,\u2019\u201d she wrote via Instagram. \u201cThank God my mom and Michael [Landon]<\/strong> and so many others were there to make sure I was safe. Can you imagine if I hadn\u2019t had them all? I am so fortunate (Sort of). Many other young women aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n Gilbert has since deleted her social media accounts.<\/p>\n Timothy Busfield surrendered himself to law enforcement in New Mexico days after his arrest warrant was issued, TMZ reported on January 13, 2026. Before turning himself in, Busfield made a statement at his attorney\u2019s office, as seen in a video obtained by the outlet.<\/p>\n \u201cHi everybody, it\u2019s Tim. I\u2019m sure most of you know that I was ordered to come to Albuquerque. I\u2019m here now. I got the call Friday night, I had to get a lawyer. Saturday, I got in the car and drove 2,000 miles to Albuquerque,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Busfield declared that he is going to \u201cconfront these lies,\u201d calling them \u201chorrible.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI did not do anything to those little boys,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd I\u2019m gonna fight it. I\u2019m gonna fight it with a great team, and I\u2019m gonna be exonerated. He claimed that the mother of the boys told one of the actresses on The Cleaning Lady set that she \u201cvowed to get revenge after her sons were cut from the final season of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n Us<\/em> reached out to Stein for comment.<\/p>\n Timothy Busfield appeared in court on January 14, 2026, wearing an orange jumpsuit. According to Deadline<\/span>, he chose not to enter a plea during the hearing.<\/p>\n After Us<\/i> confirmed that Timothy Busfield had surrendered to authorities in New Mexico, Melissa Gilbert\u2019s publicist released a statement saying <\/i>the Little House on the Prairie<\/i> actress stands by her husband.<\/p>\n \u201cDuring this period, her focus is on supporting and caring for their very large family, as they navigate this moment,\u201d the statement read. \u201cMelissa stands with and supports her husband and will address the public at an appropriate time. While these matters are personal and do not directly involve Melissa or the brand, we are respecting the privacy of the family as they navigate a difficult and personal situation.\u201d<\/p>\n Following Busfield\u2019s arrest, Gilbert also asked the judge presiding over the case to keep her husband out of harm\u2019s way while he was in jail in an emotional character letter.<\/p>\n \u201cI only want this extraordinary man safe and whole,\u201d she penned, according to court documents obtained by Us Weekly<\/em> on January 16. \u201cPlease, please, take care of my sweet husband. As he is my protector, I am his, but I cannot protect him now and I think that, more than anything else, is what is truly breaking my heart, I am relying on [you] to protect him for me.\u201d<\/p>\n Us<\/em> obtained Timothy Busfield\u2019s mugshot hours after he surrendered to the police on January 13, 2026.<\/p>\n In the photo, Busfield wore a light-washed green T-shirt and had white facial hair, including a beard. Busfield was booked in New Mexico after three warrants were issued for his arrest, including two for \u201ccriminal sexual contract\/minor 3rd degree\u201d for a child under 13 and one for \u201cchild abuse\u201d listed as \u201cintentional\u201d and \u201c1st offense,\u201d according to documents obtained by Us<\/em>.<\/p>\n The booking paperwork also listed Busfield as an \u201cactive\u201d hold but his bail amount had not been set.<\/p>\n A pretrial detention motion filed on January 14, 2026, revealed that \u201canother victim\u2019s father,\u201d Colin Swift<\/strong>, reported to law enforcement the day prior that Timothy Busfield allegedly sexually abused Swift\u2019s daughter \u201cseveral years ago\u201d in Sacramento, California.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile auditioning for [Busfield] at B Street Theatre, the 16-year-old reported that [Busfield] kissed her and put his hands down her pants and touched her privates,\u201d the motion states, according to People<\/em>.<\/p>\n Busfield allegedly \u201cbegged the family to not report to law enforcement if he received therapy.\u201d Swift, who is a \u201ctherapist himself,\u201d thought this was \u201cthe best thing to do\u201d at the time.<\/p>\n Busfield\u2019s attorney responded to the new allegations in a statement to People<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe allegations were never challenged, they were never proved, and they\u2019re 25 years old,\u201d Stein said. \u201cAnd there doesn\u2019t seem to be any connection between these allegations regarding women 25 years ago and the allegations regarding these young boys.\u201d<\/p>\n Prosecutors have requested that Busfield remain detained until his trial.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Defendant\u2019s repeated sexual touching of the victim\u2019s intimate areas, combined with deliberate grooming behaviors, establishes a sustained pattern of predatory conduct,\u201d the motion stated. \u201cThis conduct demonstrates that the Defendant poses a serious and ongoing danger not only to the named victims, but to any child placed within his proximity. Sexual exploitation of children reflects a profound disregard for the physical safety, emotional well-being and developmental health of minors, and it evidences a risk that cannot be adequately mitigated through supervision or conditional release.\u201d<\/p>\n Timothy Busfield was dropped from his talent agency, Innovative Artists, amid his child sex abuse case, a rep for the company confirmed to Deadline<\/em>. Busfield had been with the agency for several years, working with a \u201cfair-sized\u201d team, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n Dave Ring<\/strong>, partner at Taylor & Ring in Los Angeles, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> that one factor could make or break Timothy Busfield\u2019s case.<\/p>\n \u201cThe most decisive factor will be whether these boys were pressured or influenced by an adult to make allegedly false accusations against Busfield,\u201d Ring, who specializes in child sexual assault cases but is not involved in Busfield\u2019s case, said.<\/p>\n He continued, \u201cThe boys originally said the touching only consisted of tickling. Later, they said it included touching of the genitals. That is what turned the case and resulted in Busfield\u2019s arrest. It will be crucial to determine if any outside influence caused the boys to change their story. It is not at all unusual for children to disclose abuse over time, rather than the very first time they are confronted about it.\u201d<\/p>\n In an affidavit obtained by Us Weekly<\/em> in January 2026, a witness provided new details about the allegations made by a teenage girl against Timothy Busfield. Matthew Moore<\/strong> claimed that he and the teen apprenticed at the B Street Theatre in 2000, where Busfield worked as director.<\/p>\n According to Moore, Busfield received a shoulder massage from the girl while directing him during a class at the theatre. Moore shared that he \u201cdid not see\u201d Busfield \u201cinitiate physical contact\u201d with the girl, noting that nothing appeared \u201cto be predatory or abusive.\u201d<\/p>\n Moore also claimed that the girl\u2019s father, Colin Swift, made \u201cuncomfortable\u201d comments about his daughter\u2019s relationship with Busfield. He alleged that Swift told him he had written a TV show pilot that Busfield was going to help make happen.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t need an agent because you guys are going to be stars,\u201d Moore recalled Swift allegedly saying, per the docs. \u201cThey are going to love it because Tim Busfield is going to present it to them, which I\u2019m certain he will do because he will need to if he thinks he\u2019s going to f*** my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n On January 16, Busfield\u2019s legal team filed a motion to fight his pretrial incarceration, arguing there wasn\u2019t enough evidence against him to justify keeping him in jail.<\/p>\n \u201cThe state offers no reliable proof \u2014 only allegations advanced by witnesses with documented histories of fraud and financial exploitation, contradicted by a comprehensive studio investigation, and refuted by witnesses and objective risk assessments,\u201d the court docs obtained by Us<\/em> read. \u201cThe Constitution does not allow liberty to be forfeited on such a foundation.
