Spring forecast could have some surprises for Michigan

While we’re still deep into the thick of winter, stretches of sunshine already have us snow-bound Michiganders dreaming about spring.

AccuWeather has released an early peek at the spring forecast, looking at what’s ahead for each region in the country. For us in the Great Lakes, we might want to temper our excitement. Spring looks like it could be colder than normal once the calendar flips to March.

Michigan is part of a group of 16 states that are expected to see a slower transition to springlike weather this year. All these states are in the Great Lakes area, Upper Midwest, Northeast and Northwest parts of the U.S.

“The transition to warmer spring weather will be slower across the Northeast, Great Lakes and the Pacific Northwest this year, compared to historical averages,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok said. “Warmer springlike weather is expected to arrive early this year across much of the Southwest, from Southern California to Texas.”

This slower transition to spring is being shaped by a slower jet stream, a strong storm track expected in the South, and the fading of the La Niña weather pattern.
