Jonathan Roumie is celebrating a milestone in both his professional career and personal faith journey.
“If only I’d known…😳🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️Eight years ago, I was invited to play Jesus in an obscure, crowd-funded four-episode ‘web series’ (basically 😂) which you could ONLY view via its proprietary app 😳🤪, that chronicled Christ’s ministry over three years,” Roumie, 51, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, April 26. “There was only enough money to fund the first HALF of the first season. But by the grace of God, here we are SEVEN seasons later 😱😱!”
The Chosen is the first multi-season series about the life of the Christian Jesus. It became the largest crowdfunded media project in history, raising over $10 million for its first season. It has since grown to more than 250 million viewers worldwide.
Roumie has had the opportunity to play Jesus throughout the project, which has spanned more than 40 episodes.
“Words will never adequately describe the incredible honor it has been to portray our Lord in the @thechosentvseries, not only in those first four episodes — specifically because of what they meant to me at that moment in my life personally — but for all the subsequent moments, encounters, stories and spiritual lessons He would allow me to participate in and learn from all these years later,” Roumie shared. “He is always true to His Word!! Trust Him with your troubles.”
To mark the milestone, Roumie shared a throwback video where he described himself as “utterly penniless, past-due and out of prospects” before signing onto the faith-based project.

“When I say ‘emotional,’ I was barely keeping it together on-camera as I was reflecting on God‘s Infinite Mercy in my life at that moment,” he explained of his life before joining The Chosen cast. “I so appreciate all your prayers as I get ready to ‘step back into His sandals’ one last time. 🥹🙏🏽❤️ Thanks for joining me friends.”
Season 7 of The Chosen is confirmed as the final season of the series, with production beginning this month in Texas.
The season is expected to focus on the Resurrection and, following a new deal with Amazon MGM Studios, its premiere is set for theaters on March 31, 2028.
No matter how much time has passed since the show first premiered, Roumie previously told Us Weekly that he never gets tired of hearing positive reviews from fans who say the project has had a positive impact on their life.
“I’m always humbled to hear their expressions and love for the show,” he shared in August 2024. “It just makes me feel like, ‘OK, I’m doing something that’s contributing to the world in a positive way and having an impact on culture in a way that I never thought I’d have.’”
Past seasons of The Chosen are streaming now on Amazon Prime.
