My boy has Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis. It’s an autoimmune condition that is actually common to Rotties. He is allergic to every meat protein on the face of the earth! I even have to be careful dishing up dog food and make sure I serve his first as even the residue from a meat-based canned food on the spoon will have him puking for days with bloody water coming out the back end like a fire hydrant! We used to use the Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein, but holy cow, did that price get outrageous!! I switched him to Natural Balance Vegetarian, both canned and kibble, and he has done fantastic for several years now!

Stay away from food that has chicken or chicken byproducts. I feed Victor (blue pack mixed with purple) as about 50% of their food, the other 50% is raw – ground meat from rabbit, including the bones/beef/lamb/fish (tilapia), organs, vegetables, and fruits. All is sent through the meat grinder. I have six Rottweilers, and they do great on it

My pup is allergic to chicken, which was her primary food from early puppy to 2 1/2. She was suffering from hot spots and horrible dry skin; she just could not bear to be touched, along with a bad tummy and attitude. I started with the vet to get the hot spots cleaned and a conversation, then I did some research on what is digestible for dogs, nutrients that will enhance her life. Tested some meats that she can eat without issues. We are now making her food: beef, pumpkin, oatmeal, and veggies on occasion. I add raw liver (no foul). Beef seems to be the best for her. My sister, with a German Shepherd, also feeds this, and the coat change was within a week or two. My pup is now a happy girl, shiny, with a good tummy, and the best attitude

We have a Rottie and a Shepard. I recently read on another forum that goat’s milk is a wonder cure for sensitive skin and stomach. It’s supposed to be a natural prebiotic. The local dog supply store has it in the freezer. I give them half a cup after dinner, and they love it. Ever since we incorporated it into their diet, they have not had issues anymore.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Foods for Rottweilers with Allergies

1. What are common food allergies in Rottweilers?

Rottweilers often develop allergies to common proteins like beef, chicken, or dairy. Grains like wheat or corn can also trigger reactions. Identifying and avoiding these allergens is key to managing symptoms such as itching, ear infections, or digestive issues.

2. How can I tell if my Rottweiler has a food allergy?

Symptoms may include excessive scratching, red or inflamed skin, chronic ear infections, vomiting, or diarrhea. A vet can perform elimination diets or allergy testing to pinpoint the cause.

3. What ingredients should I look for in allergy-friendly dog food for Rottweilers?

Look for limited-ingredient diets featuring novel proteins (like duck, venison, or salmon), grain-free formulas, and no artificial additives. Hypoallergenic or prescription diets may also be helpful in severe cases.

4. Are grain-free diets better for Rottweilers with allergies?

Not necessarily. While some Rottweilers are sensitive to grains, others tolerate them well. The best diet depends on your dog’s specific allergy profile—grain-free can be beneficial if grain intolerance is identified.

5. Can homemade dog food help with allergies in Rottweilers?

Yes, homemade diets allow you to control ingredients and avoid allergens. However, it’s crucial to consult a veterinary nutritionist to ensure the diet is complete and balanced for your Rottweiler’s needs.

6. What are the best commercial dog food brands for Rottweilers with allergies?

Brands like Hill’s Prescription Diet, Royal Canin Hypoallergenic, Blue Buffalo Basics, and Natural Balance L.I.D. offer specialized options for dogs with food sensitivities. Always choose formulas tailored for large breeds and consult your vet.

7. How long does it take to see improvement after switching foods?

It typically takes 6–8 weeks for allergy symptoms to subside after changing your Rottweiler’s diet. Consistency is key—avoid giving treats or table scraps that may contain allergens during this period.
