Reigning MLS Defender of the Year Tristan Blackmon has reported to preseason with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday morning to complete an entrance medical, the club confirmed.
Blackmon was initially supposed to report on Wednesday, a source briefed on the situation said, but didn’t show up as contract talks remain at a standstill. A source says no new progress had been made with regard to the ongoing contract talks since Wednesday. The Whitecaps depart for a preseason trip to Spain on Friday.
“Tristan is in today … and tomorrow we fly to Spain,” Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster told media on Thursday. “That’s all we have to say.”
Schuster would not comment further on the status of contract talks, citing a policy not to discuss these details publicly regarding Blackmon or any other player. The club firmly insists Blackmon, who is contracted through 2027, will remain with the club, which has an interested suitor. Inter Miami submitted a bid for him worth around $3 million, according to sources.
“Yes, absolutely,” Schuster said when asked if he expects Blackmon to be a Whitecaps player on opening day. “If we would have a different idea, we would have negotiated with Miami. They sent us an offer, we never negotiated with them. With all respect, this isn’t something (with us versus Miami). They put together a fair offer, they behaved (professionally) and did not pressure us.”
Blackmon, the 29-year-old center back, was one of the key driving forces behind Vancouver’s stellar 2025 season, which saw the club win the Canadian Championship while finishing runner-up in MLS Cup and the Concacaf Champions Cup.
He has made 141 appearances for the Whitecaps since arriving from LAFC in 2022 and earned his first two caps with the U.S. men’s national team this past fall, starting against both South Korea and Japan in September.
Sorting Blackmon’s situation adds to a busy winter for Vancouver, which has already transferred Ali Ahmed to Norwich City and traded Jayden Nelson to Austin FC. The club also remains in contract talks with star midfielder and U.S. international Sebastian Berhalter, whose 2026 option was exercised after last season.
