Danish soccer club Midtjylland has said its midfielder Alamara Djabi has undergone surgery for life-threatening injuries after being stabbed.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who is now in a stable condition, had two surgeries and was placed in an induced coma after the weekend incident in Herning, the central Danish town where the club is based.
Midtjylland said the club would not comment further while a police investigation is being carried out, with witnesses being spoken to.
“Alamara Djabi was subsequently in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery,” Midtjylland said on Tuesday.
“Since then, he has undergone another operation, and thanks to the professional efforts of the emergency responders and later the hospital staff, his condition is now stable.
“He has awakened from an induced coma and is doing well under the circumstances. FC Midtjylland is in close dialogue and cooperation with the authorities and is providing support to Alamara Djabi and his family.”
Djabi is from Guinea-Bissau and came through Benfica’s youth academy. He has made two first-team appearances for Midtjylland this season: once in Denmark’s Superliga and another in the Europa League play-off.
He joined Midtjylland’s youth team in 2023 and spent last season on loan at Portuguese second division side Mafra.
Midtjylland, who are second in Denmark’s top-flight and four points behind leaders AGF, were eliminated from this season’s Europa League last-16 stage by Nottingham Forest on penalties.
