President Donald Trump interrupted a live TV speech honoring King Charles’ arrival in the United States to make a joke about his marriage to Melania Trump.
While speaking outside of the White House on Tuesday, April 28, Donald, 79, recalled the relationship between his late parents, Fred Trump and Mary Anne MacLeod.
“She came to America at 19,” Donald said of MacLeod, who was originally from Scotland. “She met my father. We loved him so much, we all loved him, we loved her, we loved him: Fred. And, they were married for 63 years.”
Donald then turned to his wife, who sat behind him on stage, and said, “And, uh, excuse me, if you don’t mind, that’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling.”
The event’s attendees, which included Charles, 77, and wife Queen Camila, laughed at the joke, prompting Donald to continue.
“I’m sorry, it’s just not going to work out that way. We’ll do well, but we’re not going to do that well,” he added.
MacLeod, a socialite and philanthropist, married Fred, an American real estate developer, in 1936. They remained together until Fred’s death at age 93 in June 1999. MacLeod later died at age 88 in August 2000.
In addition to Donald, MacLeod and Fred shared four other children: Fred Jr., who died in 1981, Robert, who died in 2020, Maryanne, who died in 2023, and Elizabeth, 84.
Donald added in his speech that MacLeod had an interest in British figures.
“My mother, I just see it so clearly, she loved — I told the king this — she loved the royal family, and she loved the queen,” he said. “And any time the queen was involved in a ceremony or anything, my mother would be glued to the television, and she’d say, ‘Look, Donald, look how beautiful that is.’”
The president continued, “She really did love the family, but I also remember her saying, very clearly, ‘Charles, look, young Charles, he’s so cute.’ My mom! My mother had a crush on Charles, can you believe it? I wonder what she’s thinking right now!”
Donald and Melania, 56, tied the knot in 2005. They share son Barron, 20.
Donald also shares sons Donald Jr., 48, and Eric, 42, and daughter Ivanka, 44, with ex-wife Ivana Trump. The two were married from 1993 to 1999.
Donald was also previously married to Marla Maples, with whom he shares daughter Tiffany, 32, from 1977 to 1990.
Donald’s address at the White House on Tuesday comes days after he and Melania attended the Saturday, April 25, White House Correspondents’ Dinner inside the Washington, D.C., Hilton, where shots were fired in an alleged assassination attempt. Cole Tomas Allen was arrested for the shooting and charged with attempting to assassinate the president, interstate transportation of weapons and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime.
