EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures is getting ready to take audiences out to the ball game next spring as the stdio has dated the rom com The Catch, starring Emma Stone and Chris Pine, for May 21, 2027. Deadline recently reported that Pine was in early talks to join Stone in the upcoming pic directed by Dave McCary. Patrick Kang and Michael Levin penned the script.
Plot details remain unknown other then it being described as a two-hander rom-com. Stone had been weighing several options in the fall, but after a recent draft came in on The Catch, she turned her attention to this project and once Pine was on board, the film the was go for later this year.
Shawn Levy and Dan Levine will produce through 21 Laps. Michael H. Weber will produce. Stone, McCary and Ali Herting will produce through Fruit Tree. Universal signed Fruit Tree to a first-look deal after landing the film in 2024.
Universal’s Senior EVP Production Development Erik Baiers and Creative Executive Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
Stone is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Pine is represented by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Gendler, Kelly & Cunningham. Fruit Tree is represented by WME, Mosaic and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
