Arsenal have extensively scouted Victor Froholdt this season during his incredible season for Porto ahead of a potential summer move. Arsenal chiefs have made checks over the talented midfielder in recent weeks, according to reputable Danish journalist Mads Wehalst and well-respected club insider Hands of Arsenal. The Danish international only joined Porto last summer from FC Copenhagen for €20 million but he’s been instrumental to their title-winning side. Froholdt has started 31 of Porto’s 32 games in Liga Portugal, contributing an impressive 11 goal contributions from central midfield – six goals and five assists.

It’s understood that several Premier League sides have monitored the 25-year-old’s development across the campaign with Arsenal viewed as leading contenders. Transfermarkt understands that Froholdt has an €80m release clause in his contract but he would realistically be available for below that – his market value is currently €30m but set to rise. Froholdt has recently expressed his desire to remain at Porto next season but his stance could change given the interest from one of the best clubs in the world. Speaking recently, Froholdt said: “I’d love to stay here next season, to play in the Champions League for Porto. I already feel at home in Porto and I’m very happy here.” In the latest edition of our Market Values podcast, we spoke to Gonçalo Tristão Santos, Transfermarkt’s Portuguese expert to get the lowdown on the Porto sensation.

The view from Portugal on Victor Froholdt

“He was the best player in the Portuguese league this season,” believes Santos. “And so it was also therefore the best signing of the season. “Froholdt is that very complete midfielder that seems to be everywhere on the pitch. He does everything and he does it very well. He was probably the most decisive player to Porto’s success this season. I was really surprised with the way he played. I also had my doubts about Froholdt being a starter this season — there’s absolutely no doubt now.”

On his future, Santos added: “My only doubt now is whether Porto is going to be able to keep him in the squad for next season. Maybe the biggest European clubs will think he still needs another season in the Portuguese league.” I think he has an 80 million euro release clause, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a club could reach — maybe not 80 million euros — but a very high fee to try to sign him, because he was just amazing all this season.”
