Medguard’s partnership with European healthcare leader Mediq marks a pivotal moment for Irish healthcare, promising greater resilience, deeper clinical support and an expanded suite of innovations for patients and providers alike
Founded in 2009 by entrepreneur Paul Clifford, Medguard Professional Healthcare Supplies was built on a simple but ambitious idea: that Ireland’s healthcare providers deserved a single, reliable partner they could trust. Joined shortly afterwards by Managing Director Lisa Mullaney, the pair set out to reshape the standard of service in the sector, creating a customer‑centred organisation grounded in responsiveness, integrity and clinical excellence.
When Medguard Professional Healthcare Supplies first opened in Ashbourne, Co. Meath in 2009, it did so with the ambition of becoming Ireland’s most trusted total solution provider for medical devices and consumables – and offering a quality of customer care that the sector had not yet experienced.
For Managing Director Lisa Mullaney, the company’s origins remain central to its identity.
“Paul Clifford, Director and the founder of the company, recognised a gap in the market for a one‑stop shop for healthcare in Ireland,” she explains. “Previously, customers had to rely on multiple suppliers and faced long lead times and poor communication, which caused serious disruptions to their operations. He saw an opportunity to create a complete solution for medical products with a strong emphasis on unrivalled customer care.”
That promise quickly became Medguard’s differentiator. Over 16 years, the company expanded far beyond its original base of nursing homes and GP surgeries.
“We now touch all avenues of healthcare,” says Lisa. “HSE, acute hospitals, community care, private hospitals, nursing homes, GP surgeries, aesthetics, education and simulation, fertility – we have really diversified as healthcare itself has evolved.”
Today, Medguard offers more than 10,000 products, including over 250 own‑brand items. Its catalogue is backed by responsive customer service, expert product support, a dedicated service department, and a Clinical Education Academy that provides CPD‑accredited courses. Next‑day nationwide delivery – achieved with 98% accuracy – has helped cement its reputation as one of Ireland’s most dependable suppliers.
Regulatory excellence has become another pillar of its model, with MDR compliance, HPRA Wholesale licence and ISO certifications embedded into day‑to‑day operations.
What began as a three‑person operation in a modest warehouse has grown into one of Ireland’s leading providers of medical devices and clinical solutions. The company is proudly Irish and still based in Ashbourne, yet it is now poised for a transformative new phase through its partnership with European healthcare leader, Mediq.

Despite the scale, the organisation’s ethos has remained remarkably consistent.
“Our key focus is allowing healthcare professionals to spend time with their patient,” Lisa says. “When you place your order with us, you receive your order the next day and you get a correct order, allowing you to focus more on patient care rather than administrative tasks.”
A REPUTATION BUILT ON TRUST
At Medguard, service is not a marketing slogan; it is the company’s operating principle.
“Trust in the market we are in is fundamentally important,” Lisa says. “We always relay to our team that this could be a family member. When you are packing an order or paying a supplier, this product might be going to someone you love.”
That philosophy has created a culture in which taking responsibility is the norm and transparency is automatic. This proactive communication has led to long‑term customer loyalty.
“If we do make a mistake, we are the first ones to ring our customers,” Lisa says. “We will explain, ‘This is what has happened – how do we fix it?’ That trust and transparency have really been at the core of Medguard’s success.”
This approach also underlined the company’s earliest partnerships. Long‑standing relationships with SIMS IVF Clinic and Alliance Medical MRI, first secured in 2009 and 2010, remain active today.
“Their continued loyalty is a testament to our commitment to service and has helped shape Medguard into the trusted partner it is today.”
As the business expanded, Medguard invested in the systems required to keep its promise. Securing its HPRA wholesale licence in 2010 provided a formal framework for patient safety.
“All team members are trained on GDP,” Lisa says. “Patient safety is at the forefront of everything we do.”
In 2016, Medguard implemented a comprehensive ERP system, ensuring full visibility across order management, communications, logistics and customer service.
“If a customer rings and the person dealing with them is on a break,” Lisa explains. “Whoever picks up next knows exactly what the customer was talking about.”
That same year, Medguard articulated its four core values – people, innovation, genuine, exceptional – which continue to guide its culture.
“Anyone who walks into Medguard tells us our values are not on the wall – they recognise it in our people and in the atmosphere of the office.”
Since then, Medguard has broadened into medical furniture and equipment, deepened its regulatory infrastructure, strengthened its digital tools and achieved ISO certifications in quality, environmental performance and occupational health and safety.
A PARTNERSHIP WITH MEDIQ
In early 2025, Medguard’s progress converged with a new strategic opportunity when Mediq, one of Europe’s foremost healthcare partners, approached the company regarding a potential acquisition.
Mediq supports healthcare providers across hospitals, primary care, community services and homecare throughout Europe and the UK. Its portfolio combines trusted own‑brand products and global brands with advanced logistics, digital ordering platforms and deep regulatory expertise. Its mission is “to deliver the right and most efficient outcomes to European healthcare.”
Rory Batt, Chief Digital Officer and Managing Director of Mediq UK
Rory Batt, Chief Digital Officer and Managing Director of Mediq UK, said:
“Ireland is an attractive market, and we’ve been exploring opportunities for some time. We wanted a partner with strong local reputation, good customer relationships, but also a model that we could scale and enable. Medguard stood out immediately.”
Lisa Mullaney, Managing Director of Medguard
Lisa recalls:
“It was a bolt from the blue. We were passionate and ambitious and planning further growth. But when we sat down with Rory, we were struck by how aligned our strategies were.”
She and Paul also felt a responsibility to the team:
“For all the effort and commitment they have offered to Medguard, it would have been an injustice not to explore this opportunity seriously.”
DELIVERING FOR IRISH HEALTHCARE
The Medguard–Mediq partnership promises a step‑change in supply resilience, clinical expertise and product choice for Irish Healthcare providers. By uniting Medguard’s local knowledge with Mediq’s European scale, clinicians will gain access to a wider range of proven healthcare solutions.
A major advantage is Mediq’s extensive product portfolio.
“For Medguard, this means stronger supply resilience,” Lisa says. “Mediq has an amazing portfolio of products that can offer savings and clinical expertise.”
Prominent additions include Nutrition which Medguard does not currently supply; a greatly enhanced incontinence care portfolio; which Lisa believes will allow the company “to become a pivotal supplier in the Irish Market”; and advanced wound‑care solutions, including Mediq’s Kliniderm range, already widely adopted across Europe. Together, these expanded offerings will deepen Medguard’s clinical impact and support better outcomes for patients nationwide.
“In the UK, seven million Kliniderm dressings used annually”, Rory notes “It’s the most used dressing in Scotland, and behind that portfolio is a team of clinical leaders, including former NHS tissue viability nurse leads, who work directly with clinicians.
Training and clinical education – core elements of Medguard’s service – will also be strengthened.
“Mediq will look at your needs and offer value based on clinical evidence, such as recommending products that have been proven to improve patient outcomes or reduce costs in similar healthcare settings.”
Lisa says. “With both teams joining together, there will be significant learning opportunities for clinical training, sharing best practices, and gaining exposure to innovative healthcare technologies for us and for Irish healthcare.”
The integration will be deliberate and thorough. “Our team wants to know the product inside out,” Lisa says. “They need to be 100% behind any product before bringing it to our customer.”
DIGITAL INNOVATI0N AND THE HUMAN TOUCH
Mediq’s scale allows it to invest deeply in digital tools and AI‑supported systems, but both companies are clear: technology must simplify healthcare, not distance providers from patients. “Innovation is really important to Medguard,” says Lisa. “But we see it as something behind the scenes. We are one step away from our customer, not two steps away—and we want to remain that way.”
The Mediq team
Rory agrees. “We’re not going to jump to a soulless bank‑type model where you never speak to a human. It’s not appropriate for this industry. But we do have proven digital solutions in ordering, logistics and patient platforms that can be introduced in Ireland at the right time.”
Together, the companies expect to make healthcare delivery simpler, faster and more reliable. “Customers will be shocked at the improvements once the integration is done,” Lisa says. “We will see reduced administration, streamlined ordering and customers having more time for patients.”
Ireland’s wider healthcare priorities – improved access, stronger community care and accelerated digital transformation – align closely with what the partnership offers. “At its heart, this is about delivering real value at patient level,” Rory says.
The partnership also offers significant opportunities for Medguard’s team. “Medguard’s success is because of our team,” Lisa says. “They will now have a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, and access to tools and technologies we may not have been able to offer for five or ten years.”
European collaboration will add a further dimension. “I would be delighted to see our team visiting the UK, the Netherlands, Germany,” Lisa says. “What knowledge in clinical best practice and solutions they bring back to Ireland will be priceless.”
Clinicians across Ireland will also benefit through wider product choice, stronger training pathways, enhanced supply resilience and access to best practice from other health systems. “Irish healthcare professionals are hungry for knowledge,” Lisa says. “Working with Mediq across Europe allows us to bring best practice home—and provoke new conversations.”
The next chapter will see Medguard expand its product range, strengthen supply resilience and continue building its service offering. Two priorities, however, remain constant.
“We are very proud to be an Irish company with Irish heritage and local expertise,” Lisa says. “Every time we grow, it is important for Paul and I to check our customer‑centric culture has not changed. The only change should be an enhancement.”
“Every decision prioritises the needs of our customers and the safety of the patient, and that will not change,” she adds.
Mediq’s role is to empower, not re‑shape, the organisation. “We’re ready to cheer it on, support it, enable it,” Rory says. “But fundamentally, the goals are owned by Lisa, Paul and the Medguard team.”
A MESSAGE TO IRELAND’S HEALTHCARE COMMUNITY
Following the official announcement of the Medguard Mediq acquisition, both leaders want to reassure Medguard’s partners. “It’s important for our patients, partners and the healthcare community to know that Paul and I are still here actively leading Medguard” Lisa says. “The hands‑on approach we have always taken will remain. Medguard’s core values and Irish identity will stay at the heart of our business.”
The partnership, she says, is about building on strength. “This empowers us to deliver even greater value, innovation and reliability. Together with Mediq, we are building a stronger, more connected healthcare ecosystem. The response from partners since the announcement has been humbling.”
Rory echoes her view. “This is a partnership built on shared values and shared ambitions. We’re building on Medguard’s foundation, not replacing it. And with Mediq behind the business, we can offer more value, more choice and more resilience to the Irish healthcare market.”
Medguard’s journey – from a small Ashbourne warehouse to a partnership with a European healthcare leader is a testament to Irish entrepreneurship and the enduring importance of customer care and trust in business and particularly in healthcare.
By combining Medguard’s local heritage, customer‑first culture and deep relationships with Mediq’s European scale, clinical expertise and digital capabilities, this new alliance offers both continuity and meaningful progress.
Clinicians will benefit from better tools, stronger support and more time for patient care; patients will gain safer, more efficient and more reliable services; and the healthcare system as a whole will move toward a more connected, resilient and future‑ready model, rooted in Ireland, strengthened by Europe, and designed to meet the demands of the years ahead.
